Purely for fun, what is the one song that tipifies Gregg Allman for you?

I am torn between a bunch:
Come & Go Blues
Midnight Rider
Whippin' Post
I'm No Angel (though he didn't write it)

Although most people here would go with "Midnight Rider" or "I'm No Angel", for me it's "Come & Go Blues"...

It's just the song that SOUNDS like Gregg to me, or at least the Gregg that us fans know.

It's a mervelous step forward in the blues tradition, and a great vehicle for his greatest asset... His voice.

Queen of Hearts, without a doubt. That is the essence of Gregg's sound. Today, Desdemona, or, as I like to call it, Queen of Hearts II.

Desdemona reminds me of Queen of Hearts too, especially how they both have that jazzy section after the second verse. Desdemona is my favorite off the upcoming album.

I'd have to go with Queen of Hearts.

I'd have to go with "Please Call Home" also. I can definitely relate to that song.

These Days

The song has the mood that translates so well to all of his other material. I think Quenn of Hearts and Please Call Home come a close second.

Midnight rider is the song he is most known for on a larger scale, but his "sound" isn't as evident with it.

I think Dreams, Whippin' Post and Leave My Blues at Home describe him. The pain goes down to his soul, his life has been a soliliquy of sadness and loss, but he won't stop, he can't stop, cause he's got those Dreams and resiliency. His vulnerable spot is needing someone to deeply believe in him, he's not as self reliant/sufficient as this life tries to force him to be. But then again, he has all of us as long as he's bound to keep on ridin'.

MichaelWilliams and MC3, I'm with you: Queen of Hearts. I never get tired of it, and I can't imagine anyone else doing it justice.

Interesting topic. From a GAF perspective, I think its a tie between Queen of Hearts and These Days. On the ABB side of things, Aint My Cross to Bear sometimes comes across as ironic, considering how he's soldiered on these years, through it all. Then again, maybe its all the songs he's written: each reveals a little bit of him. I think GA's songwriting and musical vision exemplifies his multi-dimensionality--which is a good thing
We're all multi-dimensional. Sometimes we just don't know it.

Multi - colored Lady is probably one of my favorites. But all that soulfull , footstomping , jazz jumping music does it for me.
Peace

Gosh, there are so many.
One song that reminded me of what an incredible singer Gregg is, is Catfish Blues from the One More Try set. I also was blown away by how much his own, he makes his cover of t5he Beatles' "Rain" sound like. Similarly, Ray Charles has to love Gregg's take of "Brightest Smile In Town," from Playin' Up A Storm.
Then there are his own compositions -- Come & Go Blues, Oncoming Traffic, Please Call Home, Oceans Awash The Gunwales -- on and on it could go.
For stark emotion and feeling, there's never been another singer like Gregg IMHO. When he's not coming from the heart, he's coming straight from the gut -- the guy is just amazing.
One more comes to mind too -- the version of These Days he does with Graham Nash on the Inside Track TV show.
There are many, many other examples, as we all know.
The universal language of music is so much better off for having a participant like Gregg.

Brightest Smile in Town - the old Ray Charles Song. Just pure blues.
(you said only one and yet I think Gregg's work far exceeds one song).

I think it is Dreams, Come and Go Blues (for all the agony relationships have put him thru), and Leave My Blues at Home for the determination he finds in himself even when he is at the end of his rope, he will come back better than ever.

I was just listening to the NYE show at the Tabernacle (thanks Clay), and it reminded me that this fall I had really been digging what I think is one of Gregg's most underrated songs:

Ocean Awash the Gunwale. The beautiful yet unconventional melody is just wonderful. It kind of strikes me as being a stop on the road to Desdemona.

ffisher: I agree with you. I was going to say Ocean Awash the Gunwale, until I got HTN and heard Desdemona.

I thought I had my answer till I read through all the great posts here. So I'll take the easy way and do categories:

ABB song: Dreams
Gregg solo: Queen of Hearts
New song: (toss up: Desdemona or Old Before My Time)

Okay, my favourite: Melissa. (If I would have had a daughter that would have been her name, of course I would have wanted a second one, Jessica)
